Software

For this class we will need the following software (all available free of charge):
(ONLY use the 2010 EXPRESS editions)

  • Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express Edition
This is the Visual Basic part of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. If you already have Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, you do not need to install this Express Edition. Go to www.microsoft.com/express and click on Downloads.

  • Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express Edition
This comes with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. If you already have Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, you do not need to install this Express Edition. Go to www.microsoft.com/express and click on Downloads.

  • Adobe Reader (aka Adobe Acrobat Reader)
Go to www.adobe.com and click on Get Adobe Reader.

  • Java Runtime Environment
Go to www.java.com and click on Do I Have Java.

  • Adobe Flash Player
Go to www.adobe.com and click on Get Adobe Flash Player.

  • Google Docs
Go to docs.google.com to learn more and get started with Google Docs. If you have another word processor, you may use that instead of Google Docs.

These are the system requirements for this class. If your computer does not meet these requirements, you will not be able to use it for this class.

  • Internet Access
Any Internet access will work, however, high speed Internet access with cable or DSL will work better for this class.

  • Web Browser
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7 or higher.

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition
These requirements are for all of the programming languages in Visual Studio including Visual Basic and Visual C++. We will be using version 2010. Other versions may not work for this class. This software requires the following...

    • Minimum 1.6 GHz or higher Intel or AMD CPU. Microsoft recommends 2.2 GHz or higher.

    • Minimum 192 MB of RAM (memory) . I recommend 512 MB of RAM as a minimum, but you will be much happier with 2 GB or more.

    • You will need 1.3 GB (1,300 MB) of free hard disk space.

    • Microsoft Windows XP (with SP3), Microsoft Windows Vista, or Microsoft Windows 7.

If you want the professional version of this and other Microsoft software (not required for this course), you can get it for free by registering at Microsoft’s www.DreamSpark.com. You will need to provide proof of college student status through a university or through www.JourneyEd.com.
